Are classes cancelled?

Confirmation of strike action by the AUT was received on Monday morning, Janaury 28th. As such, all classes have been suspended until further notice.

Will the academic term be lost?

Recent history of strikes at universities in Canada would suggest that an academic term would not be lost. It’s the university’s intention to secure a fair, negotiated settlement and resume classes as quickly as possible.

Will all student services still be operational during their regular scheduled hours (meal hall, Library, Keating Centre, Tramble Rooms, Health and Counselling, etc.)?

Yes. All student services will remain open.

What do I do? What is expected of me?

All non-striking employees paid through the payroll are expected to report to work as usual. Those who fail to do so will not be paid unless they provide documentary evidence of illness, or make arrangements for taking vacation or using other time off entitlements.

Employees paid through faculty research grants will continue to be paid if they come to work unless the University is notified otherwise in advance and in writing by the principal researcher.

Can members of other (non-striking) unions withdraw their work?

No. As mentioned above, all non-AUT employees are expected to report to work as usual. Any absenteeism must be coordinated with your immediate supervisor.

Will there be a picket line?

In the event of a picket line, picketers are required to remain on the periphery of the University. Non-striking employees may either drive or walk onto and off of University property and are to be courteous if questioned by picketers. Non-striking employees should avoid arguments, and not be provoked into any act of violence.

If a non-striking employee is prevented by picketers from entering the institution, or is feeling threatened, they should be polite, note names or descriptions of the picketers they talk to, locate a telephone and call StFX Campus Security:

If I am a member of a union that is on strike do I have to picket?

Your union representative will assist you with this question.

If courier services or other contractors refuse to cross picket lines, how do we send/receive our shipments? What alternate arrangements can be made?

Inbound Purolator Courier & Canpar packages:

  • Purolator and Canpar are not willing to deliver packages to campus during the strike action. As such, arrangements have been made with St. Martha’s Hospital to accept deliveries from these carriers only for the duration of the strike action. Please advise these couriers to redirect shipments for StFX to:
    • St. Francis Xavier University
      c/o Receiving
      St. Martha’s Hospital
      25 Bay Street
      Antigonish, NS
      B2G 2G5
  • Facilities Management Transport personnel will pick up the packages and delivery them to Receiving for sorting and subsequent delivery on campus.
  • Please note that if you require outbound service through Purolator you can take your packages to Staples retail location on Post Road, but this delivery service will not be provided by Facilities Management personnel.

Other Couriers/Carriers Delivery & Pickup:

  • ExpressPost service through Canada Post is available through the Campus Store.
  • FedEx will provide full courier services (domestic and international).
  • UPS will provide full courier services (domestic only preferred).

Chris Wesley in Central Shipping/Receiving (ext. 3997) has waybills if they are required.

Do we keep planned events and student appointments?

Yes. Please try to operate as close to business as usual as possible.

I have been receiving inquiries related to the strike. When is it appropriate to respond, when is it appropriate to forward to communications?

It’s easiest to think of responding in one of three ways:

  1. If the question is operational in nature and related to your department, please respond to the inquiry.
  2. If you do not know the answer, or need to escalate, please forward to the Information Centre:
    • Forward the email or record the person’s contact details and forward to
    • To transfer a call (while the caller is still on the line) is
    • press conference
    • press 5719 (or the number to which you want to transfer)
    • once the call has been answered (either in-person or by voice mail)
    • press conference again followed by RLS (this will transfer the call and disconnect your line)
    • To forward a message
    • listen to the message
    • press 73 to forward
    • press 5719 (or the number to which you want to transfer) followed by ##
    • press 5 and indicate who the message is coming from
    • press 79 to send the message
  3. If media, always forward to the Communications department:
    • Get the contact details from the person who is making the inquiry and send to communications
    • Direct the individual to contact communications directly:
