  1. Are classes cancelled?

    Confirmation of strike action by the AUT was received on Monday morning, Janaury 28th. As such, all classes have been suspended until further notice.

  2. Will the academic term be lost?

    Recent history of strikes at universities in Canada would suggest that an academic term would not be lost. It’s the university’s intention to secure a fair, negotiated settlement and resume classes as quickly as possible.

  3. I hear that my professor will continue to teach during the AUT strike. Am I obliged to attend?

    All classes are cancelled during the AUT strike. Students are not obliged to attend informal classes and cannot be evaluated on the material unless it is covered in the classroom following the strike.

  4. Will the residences close? What about dining hall or the library? Or other student services?

    All student services will remain open during a strike by the AUT.

  5. Should I go home in the event of a strike?

    We encourage students to stay on campus. The parties have the potential to reach an agreement at any time. However, we have now confirmed that students will receive at least 48 hours notice before classes will resume. It's with this in mind that we ask students to use their best judgment when making a decision to leave campus.

  6. How much advance notification will we be given before classes resume?

    Students will receive at least 48 hours notice before classes will restart.


  7. If I’m encouraged to stay, what should I do?

    Complete your assignments, readings and labs. We are strongly encouraging the campus community to operate as close to business as usual until further notice. The Students’ Union in conjunction with the StFX Student Life Office, Athletics and Recreation, and the Residence Office staff have created extra-curricular activities for students to take advantage of. Tutorials, recreational, social and academic events have been developed, all focused on keeping students engaged.

  8. Should I pay my tuition?

    In recognition of the uncertainty of recent events, a decision has been made to reverse late fees and interest charges applied to student accounts for the month of January 2013. In addition, the deadline for final payment of fees is extended to February 28th, 2013.

  9. Will Reading Week be cancelled?

    No. Reading Week will still continue as planned.

  10. Will I get my money back for this term if I want to go home?

    No. It is the university’s intention to resume the academic term as quickly as possible. Refunds will only be applicable if the academic term were lost due to a strike.

  11. Will I be able to continue my research?

    Student safety is of paramount importance to the university. If the research requires direct supervision by a faculty member, then access will be limited or not available. Technical staff will continue to be available to assist students in situations where it is appropriate.

    Graduate student programs and student research projects will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

    Students requiring access to laboratories, research facilities or field sites must contact the appropriate Dean and complete a Student Access to Laboratories form as appropriate.

    Students conducting independent research will be allowed to continue that research. All such students should apply to the Dean of their Faculty for access to their laboratory space, research facilities or field sites as needed. Once access is granted, the student researcher must report to the Dean/Dean’s designate in their faculty for further information on oversight and safety procedures during the strike. (Note: The University Library, Coady Library, School of Education Curriculum Resource Centre, and normal office and study space available to students are not considered Research Facilities for the purpose of this document and will normally be accessible to students. In some cases hours of access may be restricted).

  12. Will deadlines for student research award applications be changed because of the strike? -Updated Feb 6th

    In the case of many awards to support undergraduate or graduate research, firm deadlines are set by the external agency that provides the funding. In such cases it may not be possible to change internal deadlines. However in the event of a strike, the University will consider possible adjustments to the internal deadlines for applications for student research awards and may make adjustments where appropriate. Any such change to deadlines will be posted on this website.

    Please note that both the deadline for receipt of NSERC USRA applications and receipt of StFX Summer Research Internship Awards by the Office of the Associate Vice-President Research have been extended to February 18th, 2013.

    Please note that the NSERC USRA applications must be completed on-line. Complete applications that have been electronically submitted by the proposed supervisor by the February 18th deadline will be considered to have met the deadline. An official transcript is required for these applications. Both sides of the transcript should be uploaded (preferably) as black and white copy. The official transcript should also be sent/delivered to the Office of the Associate Vice-President Research.

    StFX Summer Research Internship applications should be submitted in hardcopy to the Office of the Associate VPR by the February 18th deadline. Please note that a copy of the student grade report (not the official transcript) are required for these applications.
