Getting New Employees Set Up...
Payroll
Getting a new employee set up for Payroll is extremely easy. The hiring manager needs to send a new hire package to the HR Department. This package should contain:
- A copy of the signed employment contract or completed Student/Casual Appointment Form
- Bank account information (only a void cheque or bank information form accepted)
- A completed and signed Payroll Request Form
- A New Hire Information Form (to be completed by the employee and given to you)
- Completed and signed Federal and Nova Scotia tax forms (must be completed by the employee and given to you).
- A SIN from HRSDC and the visa/work permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (if new employee is a foreign national)
All of these forms can be found on the Payroll webpage. Should you have any questions, please call our HR Assistant.
Benefits and Pension
If benefits are applicable, the employee should contact Reid Estey, Manager Benefits, Pension and Payroll, to book an appointment for enrolment in the benefits and pension plans.
StFX Orientation
StFX faculty members attend an annual orientation day organized by the Deans' offices. The following guidelines apply to non-union employees.
Our People Make the Difference...
The primary purpose of an orientation program is to make the transition to StFX a positive one and to ensure that the new employee is fully informed about her/his new job and workplace.
University-level orientation sessions are held on a one-on-one basis, usually during the first few days of employment. Please book all new employees in for a session with Karen Hughes, HR Officer.
Department-level orientation sessions between the hiring manager and the new employee should take place on the first day of employment. All information in the Department Orientation Guidelines (found above) should be covered and the completed, signed form should be sent to HR.
It is extremely helpful to complete all of the required payroll documentation at the department-level orientation session while both the manager and employee are present.
A comprehensive orientation program for employees will help to:
- Reduce anxiety - by familiarizing new employees with the workplace. It will reduce the learning curve that is present with any new position and can therefore help decrease the non-tangible costs of a long learning curve.
- Reduce employee turnover - by illustrating the value the University places in new employees and providing them with the tools necessary to perform the job effectively and efficiently.
- Reduce demands on supervisors and co-workers - the better the initial orientation, the more knowledge the new employee has and will not need to rely on others.
- Develop realistic job expectations – proper orientation develops positive attitudes and job satisfaction, leading to increased employee morale.
