Humanities Colloquium

The Humanities Colloquium is an enhanced first-year experience in the Faculty of Arts. If you are interested in History, English, and Philosophy and if you would like an interdisciplinary introduction to Western Civilization, you might wish to consider the Humanities Colloquium. Students who select the HC are simultaneously enrolled in special sections of introductory History, English, and Philosophy. These three sections are taught in a historically coordinated way, and the texts are the great books of our culture. You’ll be studying Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, Aristophanes, Boethius, St. Thomas Aquinas, Chaucer, Leonardo da Vinci, St. Thomas More, Marlow, Shakespeare, Milton, Descartes, Hume, Swift, Voltaire, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche– among others. In addition, there are supplemental lectures for the program, special study sessions, and a residence option. Please click on the Overview link for further details. If you have any unanswered questions, don’t hesitate to send an email message to Dr. Steven Balnder (sbaldner@stfx.ca) or the Coordinator, Professor C. Byrne (cbyrne@stfx.ca).
