Information For New Transfer Students

New Student Registration

If you have ever attended another university or college (including a CEGEP), you are considered to be a transfer student, even if you don't actually transfer any credits to StFX.  Transfer students can transfer anywhere from zero to sixty credits to StFX and therefore can come to StFX as first, second or third year students.

We're delighted that you have chosen to come to StFX and we are here to help you make a succesful transition.  This page contains information that is of particular interest to you as a transfer student.  From here, we'll move on to academic advising and course registration information that is designed to assist all new StFX students.

Transfer Courses and Transfer Credit:

All courses that you have successfully completed elsewhere are evaluated to determine which of them are equivalent to StFX courses.  Then, any of these equivalent courses that can be used to satisfy your StFX program requirements are "transferred" to StFX.  That is done by entering the StFX equivalent courses, along with their credit value, into your StFX academic history as if you had completed those courses here.

The Registrar maintains a database of StFX equivalent courses for numerous post-secondary institutions.  If you've completed courses that already exist in that database, you will receive credit for the requisite StFX equivalents, although that credit will not be transfered for those courses that cannot be used to satisfy the requirements of your StFX degree program.  If you have completed courses elsewhere that do not exist in that database, you will be asked to provide course descriptions so that they can be evaluated for StFX equivalency.

Transfer Credit and Year of Study:

Your transfer credits are considered earned credits. For students in 4-year degree programs at StFX, their total number of earned credits determines their year of study, as follows:

Year of Study

Credits Earned

First Year

Less than 24; less than 27 in Nursing

Second Year

24;   27 in Nursing

Third Year

54:   63 in Nursing

Fourth Year

84;   93 in Nursing

Pre-requistes:

Since your transfered courses are entered into your record as equivalent StFX courses, they can be used to satisfy pre-requesite requirements for higher level courses.  For example, all 200-level English courses require that you have completed either ENGL 100 or ENGL 110 before you can register in them.  If you completed an English course at another post-secondary institution and that course is deemed to be equivalent to either ENGL 100 or ENGL 110, then you are considered to have met the pre-requisite requirement for registering in 200-level English courses.  If you receive a pre-requisite  error when attempting to register in a course for which you feel you have completed the pre-requisite elsewhere, you should complete an "Application for Override" form in mesAMIS and attach it to an e-mail to the applicable department chair.  Add "@stfx.ca" to the chair's e-mail address that is displayed on the Department Contact List.

How do I know how many credits I am transferring?

You will receive at least two communications from the Manager of Admissions regarding your transfer credit.  The first one will indicate the maximum number of credits that you can expect to have transferred.  The second will indicate the actual courses for which you will receive transfer credit, subsequent to the indepth evaluation of the courses you've completed elsewhere.  You will want to have that second communication with you when you select and register in your courses for 2012-2013.  There may be other communications as well, especially if you are required to provide course descriptions for any of your completed courses or additional documentation such as official transcripts that were not submitted with your application.  After your transfer course evaluation is complete, the final step is entering the applicable StFX equivalents into your academic history in the student information system.  Once that has been done, you will be able to view your transfer credits by logging into mesAMIS and selecting "MyGrades" to view your grade report.

When can I start registering in courses?

Students transferring 24 or more credits register along with continuing StFX students, beginning on June 19th, 2012 for third year students and June 20th, 2012 for second year students.  Students transferring fewer than 24 credits will register along with other new first year students, beginning on July 17th, 2012 or July 18th, 2012, depending on their StFX degree program.  If you are awarded 24 or more transfer credits after June 20th, 2012 , you will be given an immediate start time.

When and where can I view my registration start time?

Registration start times for all students are initially set to  a date in the fall.  Then the actual times for each student are entered by June 14th, 2012 for continuing students and second and third year transfer students and by July 12th, 2012 for new first year students.  If your transfer credits are finalized after June 20th and you are awarded 24 or more transfer credits, you will be given an immediate start time.  If your transfer credits are finalised after July 18th, you will be given an immediate start time regardless of the number of transfer credits.  You can view your registration start time from the registration menu in Banner Self-Service.

This website is designed primarily for new, first year students and therefore not all of the information contained herein will be applicable to transfer students, especially those students who are transferring a significant numer of credits to their degree program at StFX.  Hopefully, though, it will provide you with the information you need to select your courses for 2012-2013 and get registered in them.  If you have any questions about the registration process, please contact the registration help center.  If you have further questions about your transfer courses or course selection, you are encouraged to contact our academic advisors.  Once you begin the steps, you can navigate back to the beginning by selecting the "Back" button at the top of any of the Registration Guide pages.  Now, let's go to the New Student Registration Guide. Good luck!
