Residents are expected to plan arrival to and departure from residence according to the dates of the contract. Early arrivals and late departures are difficult due to the need to complete cleaning and repair, the use of rooms by summer groups, and the need to assign rooms to incoming students. If you would like to request early arrival to or late departure from the residence halls, you will need approval from Residence Services. Please see below for more details.
What is an Early Arrival?
"Early Arrivals" are students who are granted permission to move into their oncampus housing assignments before their designated check-in dates. The designated
check-in day for new students is Sunday September 2, 2012. The designated check-in
day for returning students is Tuesday September 4, 2012. All students who wish to
move into their residence room before these dates must have their requests approved
by the Director of Residence Services.
Who is granted permission to return to campus early?
The University expects students to arrive on their assigned arrival date. Exceptions
to this rule are handled on a case-by-case basis and are primarily for students who
are student staff, part of a committee, student athletes or international students with limited flight
and visa options.
These students are typically required to return early for practices, planning meetings,
rehearsals, etc. Please be sure that your name is on that list by contacting the
organizing committee, which in turn passes the list along to the Residence Services.
If you have extenuating circumstances for arriving early, please submit your early arrival request form listed below, to residence@stfx.ca by August 15, 2012. Residence Services will review your request and determine if your circumstances warrant permission to move in early.
Early Arrival Request Form The deadline for Early Arrival Requests has expired.
Please note: Students that attempt to arrive early without permission will not be given access to their rooms until their assigned arrival date.
Do I have to pay an Early Arrival deposit?
Individual Early Arrivals do not have to pay a deposit. However, a minimum nightly fee of $100.00 for each night you are on campus prior to your scheduled arrival date. Additional fees may incur if you do not follow the early arrival agreement.
Once I have been approved as an Early Arrival, what procedure do I follow
for moving in early?
When your Early Arrival request is approved, you will be expected to sign your early arrival agreement at the Residence Services Office (Monday-Friday, 9:00a.m. - 4:30p.m.), then pick up your residence room key at Safety and Security Services.
If you are unable to pick up your key during office hours, please notify Residence
Services (residence@stfx.ca) and we will leave your key and contract at Safety and Security
Services.
Will Early Arrivals move directly into their fall room assignments?
We will make every effort to accommodate Early Arrivals into their fall assignments.
However, there may be cases where we cannot place someone directly into their fall
assignment due to the summer housing, summer camps, and summer conferences. In
this event, we will put that student in a temporary housing assignment until their
room becomes available.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
Please contact Matt Turnbull at residence@stfx.ca or 902-867-5106 if you have any
questions regarding early arrivals.
Please Note: Moving into Residence early is a privilege and is not guaranteed. The
University does not officially open for the academic year until Sunday
September 02, 2012 with the start of Orientation week. As such, please be
aware that campus dining facilities may not yet be open and campus programs
will not yet have started. Residence Services is not responsible for providing
dining or entertainment options for students arriving early.
LATE ARRIVALS
If you are going to arrive to campus after classes begin or outside of normal office
hours, you must email residence@stfx.ca to avoid having your room assignment forfeited.
