How can I cancel my room assignment?
StFX guarantees each first year, direct from high school student a space in residence if you confirm your acceptance to the university, fill out a residence room questionnaire and pay your deposit by May 1. After May 1, your application will be placed in a priority queue.
The application form is not considered complete until we have received both the application and the $400 deposit. We will accept faxed applications with credit card info included.
Please keep in mind that this application agreement is for a space in residence (not a particular room). Residence Services reserves the right to make final decisions regarding the assignment of rooms.
Can I room with someone I already know?
Your potential roommate must also list you on their application form. It MUST be mutual or it will not happen. Please mail both applications in the same envelope in order for us to consider your request to be roommates.
EXCEPTION: If you have been accepted and your preferred roommate has not, you should send in your application anyway. As we do room assignments based on the date we receive it, this will get you your place in line, so to speak. When your preferred roommate gets accepted, they should then not delay in getting their application to us. If your applications are received too far apart, then it may not be possible for us to room you together.
REMEMBER: Both applicants must name each other as their roommate preference.
Can I find out who my roommate is?
Yes. You may request to find out who your roommate is by contacting the Technical Coordinator (
residence@stfx.ca). Before the Technical Coordinator can release your roommates name and email to you, she will first need to get in touch with your roommate for permission - this may take a few days.
Transfer and re-entry students are eligible for Governors Hall and Somers & Power Halls by contacting Residence Services at
residence@stfx.ca.
Although no room changes will be considered until all students on the Temporary Housing list have been accommodated, you may request to be placed on a waitlist by contacting the Technical Coordinator (sagrant@stfx.ca). The room assignment system has been developed to be fair to all students in order of priority.
Students participating in an unauthorized room change will receive an automatic fine of $50 and be required to return to their assigned rooms.
How do I get a single room?
Single rooms are awarded to students based on your academic application date. Some single rooms are reserved for scholarship winners, students with special needs, some international students and also some athletes. These reserved singles are also awarded based on academic application date.
What is Temporary Housing?
Once all the rooms have been assigned, Residence Services creates a waiting list in order of academic application date. We provide a number of these students with Temporary Housing until a room becomes available.
This is achieved by turning lounges in residence into dormitory style housing. These rooms will be furnished with a desk, dresser, bed and chair for each student in the room, with shared telephone and computer connections. This room has a lockable door. There may be three to six students in each room, depending on the size of the room.
How long a student will be in Temporary Housing depends on where the student places on the list, the number of "No Shows" and how quickly we receive cancellations. The student could be moved to a permanent room as early as the end of September or as late as Christmas break.
Rooms become available through "No Shows". These are students who do not arrive to their residence room by 4:00 pm the first day of classes. We also receive cancellations through normal processes. Students change their plans for any number of reasons.

Can I arrive early?
I need to ship my stuff to school
Is there trunk storage?
Residents are expected to plan arrival to and departure from residence according to the dates of the contract. Early arrivals and late departures are difficult due to the need to complete cleaning and repair, the use of rooms by summer groups, and the need to assign rooms to incoming students. If you would like to request early arrival to or late departure from the residence halls, you will need approval from Residence Services. Please see below for more details.
"Early Arrivals" are students who are granted permission to move into their on-campus housing assignments before their designated check-in dates. The designated check-in day for new students is Sunday September 4, 2011. The designated check-in day for returning students is Wednesday September 7, 2011. All students who wish to move into their residence room before these dates must have their requests approved by StFX Residence Services.
The University expects students to arrive on their scheduled arrival date. Exceptions to this rule are handled on a case-by-case basis and are primarily for students who are part of a committee, student athletes or international students with limited flight and visa options.
These students are typically required to return early for practices, planning meetings, rehearsals, etc. Please be sure that your name is on that list by contacting the organizing committee, which in turn passes the list along to the Residence Services.
If you have extenuating circumstances for arriving early, please submit your request to
residence@stfx.ca by
August 01, 2011. Residence Services will review your request and determine if your circumstances warrant permission to move in early.
Please note: Students arriving in residence without early arrival authorization or on a date that has not been approved are subject to a $100.00 fee per day
I need to ship my stuff to school
If you must courier items to StFX, please make sure that the package/trunk arrives after you have arrived at school. We will not store items arriving earlier than you.
See shipping address below. Throughout the year, the Residence Services Office, will accept courier packages if they have the full name of the student, the student's room number and most importantly, the students telephone number on the package.

Is there trunk storage?
Empty boxes and suitcases can be stored in each house in the "House Trunk Room" located in the basement of each residence. Space is limited so we advise that you have your boxes and storage containers taken home until you need them in the spring. Please note that all students will have access to this storage room, and storage is at your own risk.
In April all items must be removed from this room. We do provide storage over the summer months in the University Trunk Room located in Lane Hall. There is a per item cost associated with summer storage. We do not store high value items, such as computers, TV, etc. Also, we do not store bulky furniture such as sofas.

May I Bring My Own Furniture?
No. Furniture is provided in each room. Students cannot remove the furniture provided by the university from the room. Items cannot be removed and placed in the House Trunk Room.
Can I bring a small refrigerator and microwave?
Yes, we allow bar type refrigerator and microwaves. Please keep in mind that the rooms are small and you might want to check with your roommate to see if sharing is a possibility. Rooms in Bishops Hall come with a bar sized fridge and Governors Hall rooms come with an apartment size fridge and a microwave.
Window coverings
Draperies or blinds are provided in all residences. If you take down the draperies provided, you must use the curtain rod that is provided. The type of curtain rod is an I-Bean for pinch pleaded drapes. You cannot take down the curtain rod supplied or install blinds. You cannot attach drapes in a way that will damage the wall (i.e. tacks, nails or tape). A spring tension rod works well on the inside of the window casing. In April, before leaving, it is required that the original drapes be put back on the windows.
