SERVICE LEARNING FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH SUPPORT FUND

 

November 10, 2009 Faculty Fund Colloquium

The Service Learning Faculty Development and Research Support Fund supports activities related to course based service learning. The monies for the fund were initially part of a grant to the StFX Service Learning Program provided by the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation. This grant enabled the university to explore and enhance the delivery of service learning programs and produce new research with regard to service learning.  For an overview of the grants awarded during that time, please click here.

Fund Purpose:
The Fund awards grants that help to institutionalize service learning at StFX. Grants in the past have been awarded to:

  • offset the costs of developing specific service learning components for courses
  • support learning about service learning (e.g., visiting another university to observe specific service learning courses, bringing to campus a faculty member from another university who is experienced in service learning)
  • support research on service learning
  • provide seed money leading to larger grants with a service learning focus
  • support community-based research in collaboration with community partners

March 2012 Call for Proposals

The Service Learning Faculty Development and Research Support Fund supports
activities which are related to course-based service learning, have a Canadian focus and serve the needs of the local, off-campus community.

The Fund has limited funds remaining to distribute. While the Fund Adjudication Committee will consider all proposals that meet the original Terms of Reference of the Fund (see Guidelines), priority for this Call for Proposals will be given to applications that meet one of the following strategic foci:

  • Applications from whole academic departments or from collaborative groups of three or more faculty members who seek to explore the strategic integration of service learning across multiple courses.
  • Applications which will make service learning available to a greater variety of students from Departments where students currently have limited opportunities to participate in service learning and from faculty members who have not offered service learning experiences in their courses previously.
  • Applications from faculty members who have not previously been awarded Service Learning Faculty Development and Research Support Fund grants.

Please note: The Service Learning Faculty Development and Research Support Fund no longer offers grants for Conference travel.
