SERVICE LEARNING:
THEORY AND PRACTICE
Aimed at 3rd and 4th year students
Offered in First Term in 2013-2014
Instructor: Karen Fish
At the core of this course, students will spend 30-hours working with a community organization that they will help select, based on their interests and learning goals. In seminar-style weekly classes, students will explore the theories about and goals of service learning, experiential learning, volunteerism, and community engagement, and then reflect on, questions, and discuss how these ideas relate to their personal service learning experiences. Students will reflect on the dynamics of the student-community-university relationship in both their service and learning roles. The course will encourage a deeper understanding of service learning in a university setting. Three credits.
