Support, educate, and empower students
by providing them with the opportunity to become
effective thinkers, learners, and writers.
Centre instructors assist students from all disciplines in developing their own critical thinking, writing, and self-editing practices. Instructors provide the environment for students to help themselves by emphasizing writing as a process that requires planning, critical reflection, and practice. Students can apply the strategies they learn in their appointments, whether they are within Student Success Centre programs or appointments, in their classes, other academic work and, indeed, beyond the academic arena.
The Student Success Centre provides one-to-one appointments to StFX students who want professional instructors to assist them in their academic writing. The Centre’s one-to-one appointments are free to any StFX student.
Instructors assist students from all disciplines in developing their own critical thinking, writing, and self-editing practices. Instructors provide the environment for students to help themselves by emphasizing that writing is a process that requires planning, critical reflection, and plenty of editing time.
Students are encouraged to make appointments at any stage in the writing process from the initial organization to final revisions. Students can apply these strategies in and beyond the academic arena.
The Centre has established three workshop and classroom programs: Learning English for Academic Purposes, LEAP, is a program for students whose first language is not English; Academic Program of Excellence at X, APEX, is a mandatory program for students on academic penalty; and StFX101 is a set of workshops for all students that eases the transition from high school to university and provides instruction in skills that a student might need to improve. All programs are complemented by one-to-one appointments, which are the focus of the Student Success Centre’s work.
