Genealogy Policy

The Angus L. Macdonald Library provides academic reference and research materials to the University community.

The public is welcome to use our resources during regular library hours, but should be aware of the limitations of the collection and services provided by the library staff. The library is not a genealogical centre nor a public archive.

General genealogy requests are, for the most part, referred to the following departments:

  • Reference (902) 867- 2242
  • Government Documents (902) 867-2343
  • Music/AV/Microform Room (902) 867-2216
  • Archives (902) 867-2201
  • Fr. Charles Brewer Celtic Collection (902) 867-5328

A Reference Librarian is on duty during normal library hours and this person will direct patrons to the appropriate area of the library. The Genealogical Sources guide will be available at the Reference area.

Written/telephone requests for genealogical research may be accepted on a discretionary basis. Further information may be obtained at the Reference Desk in the library.

Researchers who wish to use the Archives department should call ahead to ensure that the Archives will be open when they arrive.

No photocopying is permitted of the Celtic Collection material during the summer period (May - August). Requests for photocopying may be left in writing and will be attended to in the fall.
