How do I get a library card?

Your student ID, or faculty/staff ID is your library card (not exactly as shown).

How can I activate my Library Card?

Before you can borrow materials, you must first create an account at the library.  You can do this in-person at the Circulation Desk (See map), or you may use one of our new online forms.

Why do I need a library card?

Your library card will allow you to:

  • Borrow books and CDs
  • Borrow readings from Course Reserves
  • Access electronic resources like article databases from off-campus
  • Borrow materials from other libraries
  • Request items through Document Delivery
  • Reserve study rooms

Who can get a library card?

All currently registered students, faculty, and staff at St. Francis Xavier University are eligible to receive a library card. This includes retired faculty and staff.

Members of the public, eighteen years of age or older, can also register for a free library card.

What do I need to register my library card?

  • Student ID card (this will function as your library card)
  • Permanent home address
  • Permanent home phone number
  • Local phone number
  • StFX Email address
  • Permanent Email address
  • For the public: 2 official pieces of ID ( i.e. NS Driver's License, NS Health Card)

When will my card expire?

Students:

  • Student library cards expire every year on September 30th.
  • Please update your library card at the Circulation Desk at the beginning of September to maintain your borrowing privileges.
  • If you get a new student ID, inform library staff as soon as possible. They will update your account.

Public:

  • Library accounts expire one year from the date they are issued.
  • Please visit the Circulation Desk to update your account.

What do I do if I lose my library card?

Students:

  • You will have to request a new student ID from StFX Security.
  • Contact the library as soon as you have your new ID.
  • Your barcode will have to be updated in our records and we will confirm that your address and personal information is current.

Public:

  • Contact the library immediately
  • A new card will be issued and our records updated to reflect your new barcode.
