Why Music at St. FX ?

Our Jazz curriculum is the central focus of our music program. Within the walls of Gilmora Hall, you will learn competence on your instrument or voice, study the jazz and popular standard repertoire, work with and observe highly accomplished faculty and guests, and gain insights into the creative skills needed to make your own music. Our program prepares you to make any type of music in the fields of jazz, blues, pop, rock, country, and R&B.

Here are some unique features of the St. FX music program
that allow our students to excel:

Personalized Instruction and Mentorship:
Small class sizes mean that each student gets a lot of individual attention from our accomplished faculty and visiting artists. The music program places particular emphasis on improvisation and composition to produce graduates that are both creative and adaptable to any musical style.

Supportive student environment:
St. FX prides itself on its friendly and supportive atmosphere and the music department exemplifies this. Music students collaborate frequently and have a strong sense of community. On the third floor of Gilmora Hall students can be found practicing, jamming and perfecting their skills at any time of day.

Performance Opportunities:
Music students at St. FX have a variety of opportunities to perform on and off campus. Student groups perform regularly for such events as ceremonies, parties, athletic events and jam session in pubs and restaurants.  Students also have valuable opportunities to jam and play with visiting artists and faculty members.
“ Going [to St. FX] instead of studying classical music was undoubtedly the best decision I have ever made. "
