Marine Atlantic is currently accepting applications for a Financial Analyst to work with our Finance team, at our Port aux Basques location for a 3-year term.
Marine Atlantic’s Finance Department is responsible for processing all payroll, payables and receivables and assisting in the preparation of budgets and corporate plans. This multifaceted Department generates and distributes performance reports, compiles Federal Government reports, controls the company’s cash and financial instruments, while supporting other departments with their financial and administrative needs. Additionally, the Finance Department provides support to Marine Atlantic’s Human Resources and Pension Management Committee in the administration of the Company’s employee pension plan.
Reporting directly to the Manager of Financial Planning and Advisory, the Financial Analyst is responsible for the preparation of inputs for the Capital budgeting process and the Corporate Plan Financial Statements. The Financial Analyst will work with Managers in the preparation of monthly Capital budget variance analysis and prepare inputs into the internal and external reporting process. The incumbent will also provide financial oversight and support to project managers in determining capital asset needs.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
• Work with Managers to estimate project costs and establish account structure. Hold monthly meetings with Project Managers to review spending
• Provide support to the Operations Department during vessel planned work periods and refits by creating budgets, forecasting, tracking and reporting costs
• Provide assistance to Department Managers in determining capital asset needs
• Perform management review of capital projects using return on investment (ROI), breakeven analysis and other analytical methods
• Prepare monthly cash flow reporting for all capital projects
• Assist Department Managers with monthly, quarterly and yearly financial reporting requirements, and ad-hoc reporting to the Board of Directors and Transport Canada
• Maintain the overall Capital Plan list and track and record minutes relating to capital projects
• Prepare input into reporting process, including mid-year review process, performance book, labour and fuel reporting, key performance metrics, annual audited financial statements for the Corporation and Pension Plan, and quarterly financial statements
• Conduct analysis of economic/competitive trends impacting the Company and assist with long-term profit and loss forecasts
• Prepare budget templates for distribution to cost center and/or capital Project Managers
• Assist Managers in the preparation of monthly financial budget variance analysis and the mid-year financial budget review
• Assist with Financial Advisory requirements by conducting business case analysis, quality review of financial proposals, trending analysis and spending behavior reviews
• Be the main point of contact for the financial budgeting system (IFS Financials), responsible for loading and maintaining the budget information in the system
• Assist with fixed asset accounting and capital budgeting
• Assistance with the month end process as necessary
• Work diligently to promote a safe working environment
• Assist in the accomplishment of Company objectives as required
A university degree or college diploma in Business or Commerce (Accounting concentration), with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience, including technical accounting experience involving the analysis and application of accounting standards
A combination of equivalent education, job-related training and experience in a related position
• Thorough knowledge of accounting and finance issues, reporting, accounting standards and control techniques
• Ability to effectively analyze, resolve and report on complex financial data and identify opportunities for improvement
• Experience using specialized financial management systems and applications
• Demonstrated ability to perform tasks effectively with a high degree of interdependence and autonomy
• Detail-oriented with exceptional prioritizing and multi-tasking capability
• High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word
• Possess a professional accounting designation, (or working towards designation)
